What causes these Yeast Infections?
This fungi exist in everyone’s body, in minute amounts, in the mouth, on the skin and in the digestive tract. They are not usually a problem, as they are kept under control, by other microorganisms and bacteria that we all have in our systems. Sometimes, however, this balance can become disproportionate, causing a disturbance, thereby allowing the yeast to produce an overgrowth. This overgrowth, in turn, leads to an infection. This can sometimes be seen in the oral cavity, producing a mouth infection. Some things that can cause this imbalance are illness, stress and/or medications.
Some of the medications that can cause this imbalance are birth control pills, antibiotics or corticosteroids. Some illnesses that can cause thrush or a mouth yeast infection, are diabetes, cancer or HIV. Pregnancy, due to changes in hormones is also a culprit. Those who wear improperly fitting dentures, or smokers, can also be subject to candida, as can moms of infants, if they are breastfeeding their babies.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms of thrush are white plaques or lesions, which are raised, in the oral cavity. These lesions will generally appear on the inside of the cheeks or on the tongue. They can also appear on the tonsils, the gums, the back of the throat or the roof of the mouth. They can be uncomfortable and may bleed if knocked while brushing the teeth. If left untreated or severely infected, this candida can travel to the esophageal area. This may cause difficulty when swallowing, or a feeling of something being stuck in the throat. If the mouth yeast infection continues to spread, a fever, most likely, will manifest itself. This will continue to travel throughout the rest of the body if not stopped.
A dentist is able to confirm the diagnosis of a mouth yeast infection through a microscopic investigation of the lesions exudate. If the thrush has traveled further than the oral cavity, other diagnostic studies may also be needed.
The treatment for a mouth yeast infection is relatively simple by means of medication. This medication can be administered as a liquid, a lozenge, or a tablet, taken for approximately 10 to 14 days in duration. If other medical problems are suspected, however, your dentist may refer you to your primary care physician for further treatment.
To avoid falling victim to a mouth yeast infection some simple practices can be of help. These would include getting regularly scheduled dental check-ups, and limiting smoking, sugars, beer and bread, as the latter two items contain yeast. Good oral care is also recommended. Brushing your teeth twice daily combined with flossing your teeth, is always a good practice to prevent oral problems. Lastly, limit your mouthwash usage, as this too is a contributing factor in a mouth yeast infection. Using mouthwash, although it makes your mouth feel fresh, can upset the natural flora of microbes that are present in the oral cavity.
If you feel that you may have an oral yeast infection you should visit your dentist or primary care physician as soon as possible to prevent the spreading of the infection and to begin appropriate medical treatment.
