What’s the best way to treat tinea?

Athlete’s foot is not limited to athletes.  It is more common in this group due to easy breeding and transfer in showers.  Fungi love warm, wet environments.  People in professions where their skin (especially their feet or hands) is often exposed to warm, wet spaces are more likely to attract this fungi.

The main reason why some attract bacteria and others don’t is often related  to immune response.  If you are prone to these infections, the first priority is to avoid environments that excerbate it.  Wear thongs in the gym shower, dry your body with one towel and your feet with another, and make sure you dry between your toes.

Tinea is a stubborn organism, so often creams (even pharmaceutical ones) are ineffective.  Iodine paint or strong tea tree oil, on its own or with thyme or palmarosa oil, can work.  Cutting out all sugar and yeast – including alcohol – also helps.

If the tinea keeps recurring, see a naturopath to find out whether you have systemic candida.  Common symptoms include a thick white coating on the tongue, bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, poor digestion, genital thrush or ringworm on the skin.
